A local farmer named Chip met with me each week to fill my van with foods I could only have ever dreamed of. Grapefruits that took two hands to hold. Satsuma oranges. Sweet potatoes, cabbages, pecans, peanuts, and fresh lemons. Our grocery budget that year was $40 a week, but because of Chip’s amazing yet inexpensive produce, we were able to stay well fed.
We didn’t often share our table with others that year, but for Stuart’s birthday we decided to celebrate and throw caution (and budget) to the wind. We cooked up a “low country boil,” an enormous pot filled with corn, potatoes, and crawfish. There were so many pots that we had to find some makeshift tables. Luckily, we had a few hay bales, some old pieces of wood, and an old door.
And thus began my love affair with pop-up outdoor eating spaces.
An old door on hay bales is not only charming as a table, but it works well, too! Extra hay bales can also be used as chairs with small blankets or thick sheets laid on top to keep folks from getting poked in the backside.
Likewise, sawhorses can work just as well. An old piece of plywood can be used as the surface of the table. Simply add a tablecloth to dress it up and hide the less-than-charming plywood.
In orchard country where we live now, large wooden apple bins can often be found for free on the side of the road. Flip them over so that the bottom is on the top, and it’s a perfectly rustic makeshift table.
